Chapter 19

Mrs. Anderson popped the trunk of her car and I took out two of the paper bags filled to the top with groceries. With one in each arm, I felt like I was carrying two toddlers again.

Mrs. Anderson reached in to grab another one of the bags. She held it easily in both arms, not attempting to take a second.

I glanced into the trunk. I didn’t think I could take the two bags she left behind. Even if I took just one, it was going to be in distinct danger of falling out of my grasp.

I wished we had the twins around. They were always so determined to take everything in during the course of one trip that they’d practically collapse in the kitchen by the time we got in.

They would have heavy bags with handles wrapped around their wrists and arms full of boxes of soda and paper goods.

“I think we’ll have to make two trips,” I said, adjusting the bags in my arms for a better grip. I cursed the local Fayette grocery store for not putting handles on their bags.

“Hm, I think maybe if you grab another bag, we can get it in one,” Mrs. Anderson said. She was looking at how I had the bags arranged in my arms.

I wasn’t sure how she expected me to pick up another bag. The bags I had weren’t the heaviest, but they were very cumbersome.

“Mrs. Anderson, really?” I said, exasperated. Why couldn’t she be the one to grab the other bag?

She scoffed. “You’re a young thing. I’m sure you can handle it.”

I thought for a moment about using my magic to carry everything in, but without Presto nearby, the results could be that we would have to go back and buy entirely new groceries.

Besides, it was hard to say when others were watching at Hale Hall.

Just then, a car turned the corner onto Hale Hall’s driveway. I was surprised. I hadn’t expected anyone. In fact, besides my meeting with the sheriff, I hadn’t expected to do very much at all.

And even that I had been planning to put off.

Mrs. Anderson shot me a look. “Did you invite guests over?”

“Who do you think I’m inviting over? Nearly everyone I know is either in the castle or across the ocean,” I said.

Mrs. A raised her eyebrows at me.

“It is difficult to make friends with the townsfolk when I spend most of my time interrogating them about murders.”

She looked at me as though she didn’t believe me, but we both knew I wasn’t exactly the type to throw a wild party in the middle of the day.

It soon became very obvious who was coming to see us.

Sheriff Andrew Fitts’ car slowly rolled along the driveway, up to where we unloaded our groceries. The car shut off, and Sheriff Fitts stepped out of the driver’s seat.

He was dressed in his usual sheriff’s uniform. Fitts was always well groomed, though intentionally a bit unkempt. His graying hair was long on top and, rather than being kept in an ultra-groomed coif, was just the right amount of messy.
